niknotes:  I couldn't get Jack to tell my why he had such a rough time at lunch when Mrs. Avitabile asked him to get milk.
Tonight we had a conference with Mr. LePage at the karate studio, for his "Kenpo Report Card."  Jack got great marks on his class work, including "speed and power," "intensity," "pays attention,"  "follows directions," and "stays focused."  Mr. LePage wrote some comments as well:  "Jack has done a great job in my class.  I'm very proud of the way he has come round with his intensity.  He also has good control.  Keep up the great work!"  Mr. LePage is very impressed with Jack's improvement from the couple of lessons where he was so determined not to participate to his complete enthusiasm these last several weeks.  In fact, Jack has been asked to join the Black Belt Club, which is an honor, as not all students are asked.  And the Club members are allowed special privileges, like an all black gi, as well as a special patch on all their uniforms.  Plus, best of all, they are invited to special training classes on Friday nights.  This week's class is on "ground training," which will include techniques for escaping from an enemy who has you on the ground.  His belt will have a black stripe through the middle to designate his status as a member of the Black Belt Club, which really means someone who exemplifies the ideals of a black belt, such as honor, positive attitude, and perseverance.
But with all that, what we are all most proud of, I think, is how Jack stood up (literally and figuratively) for Mick who walked up to Mr. LePage during the conference and told him something completely unintelligible.  Mr. LePage gave Mick his full attention and replied to Mick in the same nonsense Mick was apparently speaking, "Chubba chub?"  Jack stood and said, "My brother doesn't know a lot of words, but he can tell you what activities he's doing or what he wants."  Here I go again, with the tears welling up.  Mr. LePage (who has two sons himself, aged 5 and 7) explained that he was just playing with Mick but that he was very impressed with Jack for standing up for his little brother and encouraged him to continue to do so.
