niknotes -- I guess I could type this following paragraph
in the space for Teacher Comments, but I'll just type it here. It's the
paragraph Mrs. Bracy wrote to nominate Mick for recognition of outstanding
achievement by the Council for Exceptional Children, Gwinnett Chapter.
Jack, Mick and I attended the ceremony last night, despite my questioning my own
sanity for agreeing to take them. Neither of them wanted to be there at
all. Jack claimed to be on the verge of starvation the entire
time and in tears because of it. Mick was just very quietly overwhelmed,
despite having Mrs. Kris there beside him, too! He did walk up with her to
receive his certificate of achievement, and I'm pretty sure the crowd thought he
was terribly cute in his glasses, white turtleneck, and brown vest.
Miss Kris did. So I'm glad we went, if for no other reason than how guilty
I would've felt standing up Miss Kris. I wasn't sure she was planning to
be there, but I thought she would be. And Mick got a balloon to bring
home. As far as Jack's devastating hunger, once the last honoree was
called and the crowd was invited to the refreshment table, Jack walked over to
the ladies with the cookies and very calmly and politely took a plate and chose
a cookie with m&m's in it, took a cup of punch, and then consumed
nothing. He just wanted to eat the cookie in the car, he said. But
by the time the cookie made the trip inside my purse to the car, it had broken
in half, and Jack refused to eat it. He did eat bread sticks from the
Fazoli's drive-through closer to home. Oh, yeah, the
paragraph:
"Mick's achievements this year have been
outstanding. He has learned how to be a part of a classroom and how to be
a good student. This includes academic and personal-responsibility skills,
such as following his picture schedule, learning various work jobs and
learning to complete them independently, and following directions. It also
includes social and communication skills. Mick now does a wonderful job
greeting teachers and friends, is a very nice turn taker, and is making nice
progress in learning to communicate his wants, needs, and thoughts. It has
been so fun and exciting working with Mick and witnessing his wonderful
progress. And his sweet disposition and sense of humor make our classroom
a special place to be each day."
Overall, a pleasant evening, despite how I may have made
it sound. Fortunately, the whole ceremony took only about 45 minutes so we
were home by about 8:30.
