Teacher Comments -- [Newsletter dated October 7, 2002]

Dear Parents,

Our unit on Bears and Camping was a big success and a lot of fun.  Debbie and I enjoyed watching the kids become absorbed in the bear hunt story; by the third week, they were helping us read the story.  The kids worked hard on learning new vocabulary words, and we continued to focus on answering wh- questions.  Finally, the kids acted out several good pretend play scenarios in camping center.

Our next unit is on Feelings.  We will spend two weeks on this unit.  Our story is The Way I Feel by Janan Cain.  This story describes the way the characters feel when they are experiencing various emotions (e.g. Silly is the way I feel when I make a funny face, and wear a goofy, poofy hat that takes up lots of space.  Sometimes I feel very sad and really don't know why.  Instead of playing and having fun, I cry and cry and cry.)  This story should help the kids learn to name their feelings, just like they name toys, food, clothes, etc.

The main feelings that are developmentally appropriate for preschoolers to recognize and understand are happy, sad, and mad.  So we will focus on these three.  We will look at faces expressing these feelings and label them.  We will discuss typical behaviors associated with these feelings (i.e. happy: smile or laugh; sad: cry or frown; mad: stomp foot or pout).  And we will discuss things that make us happy, sad, and mad.

Hands-on activities for this unit will include:
Looking through magazine pictures to find and cut out happy, sad, and mad faces
Making happy, sad, and mad faces using wiggly eyes, buttons, and pipe cleaners
Playing Go-Fish with facial expression cards
Making faces during a cooking activity with various items:  licorice, M&Ms, etc.

--Mrs. Kris

niknotes -- Mrs. Kris (Kris-Miss, to Mick) also sent home lyrics for Feelings Unit Songs, but I'm not going to type those up, unless someone specifically requests that.  Feel free, though.  I just won't have to type them right now.  Well, Mick was a little grumpy getting ready to catch the bus this morning, still sick I guess, but he cheered up as soon as Mr. Gene opened the bus door.  And this afternoon, he took a long nap with my comforter (which he calls "quilt") on the garage floor.  He hasn't felt warm since Friday night, though, and he rarely coughs, but he isn't all better.  I hope he'll go to bed tonight at a decent time despite the nap.
HOW WONDERFUL IS THIS FALL WEATHER????????????????
