Dear Parents,
We just finished our unit on fall
and pumpkins. The children seemed to have a lot of fun with the story,
The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything. During
free-play time, I often caught someone reading the story to himself. And I
am so proud of our guys when I hear them remember the sounds the clothing items
make in the story (e.g. the shoes go CLOMP, CLOMP), or see that they are looking
at the pictures for clues about what the text says on that page. The kids
also did a fabulous job on their texture scarecrows and the Mr. Pumpkins, and
these will be going home soon.
Our next unit is about
food. We will spend the month of November on this unit. Our story is
The Very Hungry Caterpillar, by Eric Carle. In this book, a
caterpillar emerges from an egg and is very hungry. He eats through one
apple on Monday, two pears on Tuesday, three plums on Wednesday, four
strawberries on Thursday, five oranges on Friday, and a whole bunch of food on
Saturday. When the caterpillar is not hungry anymore, he makes a cocoon,
and emerges as a butterfly.
As Thanksgiving approaches, we
will discuss being thankful for having food to eat and we will talk about our
upcoming Thanksgiving feast (see attached invitation), a time to celebrate with
loved ones.
Main concepts for this unit will
include:

Days of the week: we work on this everyday when we
do the calendar, but this will offer further practice and
enrichment
Answering wh- questions, such as why do we eat?
(because we are hungry/to get bigger and stronger), when do we
eat? (breakfast, lunch, dinner, snack), what did the caterpillar eat?
(apples, pears, etc...)
Counting objects 1-5; and correctly responding to "Give
me (3) apples"
Matching written numerals to correct set (e.g. match the
written numeral 2 to a set of two pears)
Identifying colors
Sequencing
Categorizing breakfast food vs. lunch
food
Hands-on activities for this unit will
include:
Painting with food
Making placemats
Following directions for making fruit
smoothies
Dramatic play: this center is now set up as a
grocery store and kitchen
Cooking grilled cheese sandwiches: the children
will make a grocery list, go the grocery store in dramatic play center to buy
cheese, bread, and juice, bring it all back to the table, and help the
teachers prepare grilled cheese sandwiches.
