niknotes -- Mick's class had its first Community Skills
outing today, to Super Wal-Mart and McDonald's, same as Jack's. I checked
Mick into school in time for him to ride the bus with his class, but Jack and I
met him in the school supply aisle. He was oblivious to us at first, but
when Mrs. McCracken pointed me out to Mick, he just said, "It's Mama!" and gave
me a hug and rejoined his sub-set's shopping cart, with Ms. Schafer. I've
spelled that wrong, haven't I? Mick brought his
Happy Meal home in his backpack. Yuck. But we stopped for
Chick-fil-A chicken biscuits for breakfast on the way from the hotel to school,
and that was close to 10:00 so I'm not surprised he wasn't hungry.
Anyway, before his class left, we got to hear them sing
"Tony Chestnut Knows I Love You" for Dr. Luscre's video camera, not that any of
them seemed to notice her or her camera, actually. She was the Lead
Teacher for Autism until her retirement last year and was the first Autism
teacher in the county in 1979, I think. She is still very much involved,
though, in charge of a program (which may be called Coda?) that helps train UGA
students pursuing Special Education degrees, specifically towards Autism.
The film is for those students. The song is hysterical. Mick has
been singing the first part constantly at home, but I didn't know about all the
subsequent verses, with more motions to go along, including one about how
someone loves Aileen (the kids lean to the side standing on one foot) but Aileen
loves Pat (they pat their heads) and something else about Russell (they "rustle"
by wiggling slightly all over) and Skip (they skip) and how the song is "silly,
but hip" (they point to their hips). I was cracking up and getting
teary-eyed simultaneously -- at how adorable they all are. Toe Knee Chest
Nut (head) Nose Eye Love You, that's what Toe Knee Nose.
