09/23/02:
... Mick put the popcorn bag in the microwave, wrong side up, so I said, "Turn it over," which he did. Then he said, "That's the ticket." He then pressed the popcorn (one-touch) button and is watching it pop. ...[When] the popcorn finished, ...Mick stood by me insistently urging, "You want some popcorn? You want some popcorn? You want some popcorn?" Finally, he said, carefully it seemed, "I want popcorn?" Good boy!

10/04/02:
Mick was coughing ... a fake, little cough which he does to elicit my saying, "Stuart, are you all right?" So he can answer, "I'll be okay, Mom." I think that's the only part of Stuart Little he quotes -- the part after Stuart is rescued from the washing machine.
...And he still has such enthusiasm for going to school, running up the driveway to board the bus (and always says "Good Morning!" to Mr. Gene), and loves waving at us from his seat (three rows back on the driver's side) until Mr. Gene turns out the interior light. I'm glad that Miss Debbie told me his enthusiasm for riding the bus HOME is just as great. When he gets to the "time to go home" picture on his school schedule, he reportedly scampers to the cubby-holes/coat-racks to grab his backpack and head for the door.

The Jack Report

08/14/02:
Jack did not want to board the bus this morning but didn't really put up much of a fuss. He fell asleep within half an hour of coming home, after telling me, "I don't want to be here; I want to jump out of the window with a parachute." When I asked him why, he said, "There's no time to explain."

08/21/02:
I overheard Jack this evening talking to his bat, Radar, saying, "I like the way you're sitting quietly. I like the way your wings aren't touching your desk." He heard me stifle a chuckle and said, "Don't worry, Mama, it's just a story called Radar Goes to School!"

10/11/02:
[Tonight Sean, Jack and I played Jack's new, invented board game, and when] any of us landed on a square with an activity, we all did it, not just the one who landed there. Including: tell a safety rule, act like alarm, say nice words ("I like your shirt!"), tell your name. In fact, Jack landed on the "tell your name" square and said, "My name is John W. Dullaghan!" So I said, "My name is Nicole W. Dullaghan; my W stands for Wells!" And he said, "My W stands for Wallace!" I added, "People call me Nikki." And he replied, "Around these parts, they call me Jack!" I nearly choked from laughing. (Sean is responsible for Jack's sounding like a prospector or mountain man or whoever would say such a thing. And proud of it.)
